Hip Hinge: An Important Concept For Your Golf Swing

Hip Hinge

The hip hinge! The hip hinge is one of the most important concepts to grasp when beginning to learn the starting position of a golf swing. By performing a hip hinge, this allows your body to get into a position to utilize it’s strongest muscles for producing power (glute muscles!) while protecting your lower back.

The ability to hip hinge properly stems from the following:

  1. adequate flexibility of hamstrings and glute muscles

  2. motor control to maintain a neutral spine position

How To Basics:

  1. Push your hips backward

  2. Maintain a straight/neutral spine – keep the small arch in the low back without rounding/slumping forward

Every professional golfer has mastered this movement pattern perfectly. It is one of the many factors that allow them to perform at an elite level while keeping them on the course and free of injury.
